Ingress, an augmented reality game
« on: December 06, 2013, 03:24:55 am »
Android app augmented reality game (from Google):

http://www.ingress.com/

Knew of this a while ago, but it's in open beta now, and coming out of beta next week (and supposedly to iOS then).

Basic goal is to travel to "portals" (landmarks in real life), and take them over by attacking them and placing your own markers on them when you are physically close to them with your GPS "scanner" app.  Connect two portals for a line, three lines for a triangular area (some spanning entire countries).  Get EXP for attacking, level up for for more powerful items, team up with allies to tackle stronger enemy portals.

You select to join one of two factions, resistance (blue) vs enlightened (green) permanently.  UBC (and Vancouver for that matter) is currently a blue stronghold.  I joined the green for a challenge and much more attacking/EXP gain chances!

Join the enlightened!  Let's make the campus green!

It's also got a huge viral ad campaign and lore for those interested:

So you're the one smashing all my portals :P If you want a challenge go downtown or to Burnaby. When I get back campus will be blue again.

Wait, seriously? Who are you?  But wouldn't you agree that the campus is much easier on the eyes now that it's much greener :D

Believe it or not I first learned about those riots via an episode of the old British tv series "The Tomorrow People" where I'm not saying it was aliens, but it was aliens.   ;D
